How we are progressing with our trailer

Trailer

This is the rough line of how we are going to create our film trailer, the many of the clips have been edited down in size but we need to cut down the story telling scene and maybe use some of it for a voice over, also we have some more clips to add into the trailer that have not been put in, this includes:

·         Different angles of running scenes

·         The second sacrifice scene

·         Roxie hiding and then getting dragged away
·         Lizzie finding Claire with blood on her hands – shows demon possession

This will help to split up the trailer and make it more visually appeasing and like an actual trailer.

Why are Trailers important to the Film Industry

Considering that the movie trailers show the first glimpse of what the film will be like; it’s an important thing to get right. As you have many websites: such as YouTube, that can show the clips worldwide, and so they can bring in a massive audience. You do have to also remember that the film company has to usually pay for advertisement; but if they have the trailer on YouTube then the advertisement is free, and will cover more areas.

The trailers can be shown to promote the film worldwide through media: such as the News. This then is also free advertisement, and along with interviews from the actors will entice more people to view your product at the cinema/ buy the DVD.

Sometimes, special scenes are shot only to be used in the trailer: that are used to promote the film, but the scenes are not actually part of the finished film. The companies have to always be on the lookout for the next big thing: this is important in advertising as then you can connect better with your fan base. Though its not quite taken off, considering the increasing popularity of Smart Phones and IPhones: with apps like the QR-Code reader, this allows you to view a trailer on your mobile phone, this could be the next best thing. As this would allow you to look at the film poster; then after scanning in the barcode, you would be able to watch the trailer, this would maybe intrigue the audience more (about the film) as then they do not have to wait until they get home (and possibly forget the film title).

Changes to the Plot

The plot of our story had slowly been altered; throughout the time which we have been filming, these are the alterations and the new scenes which we are going to film:

·         Drawing the pentagram onto the tree ( this will show the start of the  demon possession)

·         Shaking the trees – this will show the demonic power surrounding the location, and with the creature’s power rising

·         Sammy (aka Roxie) runs and hides under some plant life – trying to get away from the creature.

o   Then gets dragged away from hiding spot

·         Second sacrifice (Roxie) is seen lying on a pentagram and is still alive …. You then see something in the background which is the creature/ demon

·         Have more different angles of running

·         Story telling scene + dare to put the blood on the tree trunk (also a couple of reaction shots during the story of Roxie and Lizzie)

·         Re-shoot the sacrifice clip ( this is a new scene with a pictogram at the base of the tree)

·         Re-shoot entering the forest (diff angle to intersect an original shot)

·         shots of different characters with blood on them – they could be seen running

·         Lizzie finds Claire with blood on her hands tries to comfort her; looks at the camera and the audience sees Claire smiles creepily – this could show the demonic possession

·         Home scene- this could be used to show that they thought that they were safe, have one of the characters answer a parent when they say something like “Be safe” and the character responds to “what could happen … there’s nothing in the woods” or something similar.

Case Study - Quentin Tarantino

When deciding about our trailer; you could suggests that our plot line is slightly controversial ( with the thought of Religion) about the satanic rituals.
In a case study done for my Regulation of the Media lessons; I created a case study on the work of Quentin Tarantino; many of his work is controversial, but his are more about racism and violence, were ours is more religion based.

Scripted Story Idea - Start of the Demonic Scene

This is written evidence of the only speaking part of the trailer; this tells the audience the background information about the woods and about what happened, this then gives information to the audience about what has happened and this gives them a reason to give an explanation as to why this is happening, in a modern day scenario:

Filming Schedule

November

Sunday 13th - Here we filmed the scene were you see the characters entering the woods; also today we filmed the picnic scenes and some of the running scenes.
Tuesday 15th - We will edit the filming which we got on the 13th and then plan on what we need to film for the 20th
Sunday 20th - We filmed the sacrifice scene but we changed are original plan and drew a pentagram on the ground; as the fake blood was not thick enough and the colour was not as prominent, so it did not show on the trunk.

Tuesday 22th - We will edit the filming and decide if we need to do re-film any of the shots filmed earlier; but also we then decided (after viewing our work) that we needed some different shots and came up with different ideas; that we decided will shoot on the 22th to help to give more variety to our trailer.
Sunday 27th - We will film the new shots that we will add to give the trailer more variety; this consists of 12 new scenes/ or add-ons to the older clips (to segment in) or the clips that we could not do last week (the blood on the trunk).

Tuesday 29th - We will the edit the new clips and add this to the trailer; we will then start to think about the music that will accompany the trailer, as by now we will have more of an idea about the length of our trailer; we will also then decide whether we need to re-film any old clips, and also if we can come up with any other ideas that can be imputed into the trailer.
Wednesday 30th – We will use this unexpected time ( because of a teachers strike) to do any last filming of any new ideas; or if we over ran on time on the 27th then we will film any scenes not done in this time.

December
Thursday 1st – we will edit the clips all together to create our final trailer; also we will develop the music for the trailer and aim to have it completed by the end of the day.

Audience Research - Vox Pop

Questions asked to the audience:

  1. What would you expect to see in a thriller trailer?
  2. What do you think is the most memorable part of a trailer?
  3. What do you think is the most important thing to include in a trailer?
  4. What would you do if you were being chased; by an unknown identity through the woods?

The main thing that I have discovered through doing this exercise is that everybody has different interests and ideas that they would like in a film trailer; so it would be hard to please everybody’s idea, also that some peoples idea of a thriller trailer can be farfetched and would not be productive.

This has shown me that in order to satisfy the public the creator of the film must be clever in creating a trailer that will grab in the different audiences, and that it will appeal to the largest audience possible.

How a trailer reflects the Genre

What to think about:

· Lighting / mise-en-scene - realistic or not

· Cinematography

· Narrative - storyline

· Representation of characters

· Themes

· Editing - depending on the Genre ( e.g fast to build up tension)

Animatic of the Story Board

Shot List

1.      The group of picnickers going into the woods with their camping stuff. An establishing shot is used to show all of the characters and to show the magnitude of the woods.

2.      A medium to long shot shows the characters and their tents in a clearing, maybe with a fire in the middle. The surrounding trees are visible, showing that they are deep in the woods.

3.      It is later and darker and an over the shoulder shot is used whilst one of the characters tells a story about the history of the woods.

4.      A close up of the storyteller’s face with the fire lighting it from underneath to make it more dramatic.

5.      A flashback that shows what the storyteller is explaining with them still narrating the story over the top. A medium shot of a person bound to a tree, another person walks into the shot making it an over the shoulder shot. It cuts out as they walks towards the person tied to the tree.

6.      Back to the over the shoulder shot as the storyteller finishes their story and shows the other information that backs it up and shows them the supposed very same tree.

7.      Close up of the tree as the examine it and one of them accidentally grazes their palm on it.

8.      A reaction shot of the others as they look at the ‘evidence’.

9.      A medium shot of two of the campers in a tent as a shadow passes over the side of the tent and they hear rustling noises outside. They look at each other before looking at the tent entrance.

10.  Extreme close up of one of their faces?

11.  A medium shot (low angle?) showing the tents as the two people crawl out of their tent and look around.

12.  A long shot shows all of the campers looking around as they see a shadow and hear a noise. One of them (possibly the storyteller) goes into the trees to have a look but doesn’t come back.

13.  Close up of the others as they enter the woods to look for the other person and get lost themselves.

14.  Different close up shots of the characters running through the woods on their own. (Close ups of their feet, etc)

15.  Title

16.  Medium shot to close up of the main character on her own in a small clearing. She hears sounds and there are lots of shadows moving around as she looks around. Something suddenly grabs her from behind and drags her into the bushes as she screams.

17.  Title – “Coming Soon”

18.  Medium shot of one of them at home packing talking to her mum. She says “What’s the worst that can happen” before it cuts out.

Trailer Conventions

You need to show a knowledge and understanding of the key areas of studying, including:

·         Multimodal text/feature
·         Contentions
·         Structure
·         Voiceover
·         Close reading

Conventions of a Trailer
·         Voiceovers are used to tell the story and give information
·         The stars if the films are known are show cased
·         Key points are sometimes conveyed throughout titles (words on the screen)
·         Conversations between characters often consists of one liners
·         Dramatic camera angles may be chosen to show events or characters
·         Action is interspersed with an actor or director credits on the screen
·         Music plays an important role in creating atmosphere
·         The film’s title may not appear until the end
·         Montage (a series of shots from different points in the film, editing together) is often used to highlight the most dramatic, humorous or fast-paced aspects of the film
·         The trailer builds to a climax (where it ends)

Multi-media texts are film trailers (they're and example) as they make meaning through a powerful combination of different modes of communication:

·         Written text on screen
·         Spoken language
·         Moving images
·         Music
·         Sound effects

Detailed Story Idea

Our film trailer has been based on the children’s nursery rhyme “the Teddy Bears Picnic”. Like other nursery rhymes there is a sinister tone to parts of it; that inspired us to think of a creepy alternative to this popular tune, for example “Beneath the trees, where nobody sees, They'll hide and seek as long as they please …” this seems to be darker and would indicate something is amiss here.

Our story is about a young group of campers, who enter the wood were there has been a past history of killings; this is supposed to be a nice time enjoying nature, but this then changes into a night of hell. One of the girls starts to tell her friends of a story that involves a satanic ritual that happen in the very same wood, this unknown to them sets  of events that will change their attitude to the paranormal for ever, as they unknowing release a creature that has been forgotten by humanity and is hungry for flesh and blood. They happen to be in the same location that these horrific events took place; as they are ‘inspecting’ the tree one grazes their hand and blood is drawn, this is what brings the beast forward.

This then leads to an unforgettable night that will scar them forever; separated and alone, as they battle for their lives against an unprecedented enemy, in a wood that never seems to end, it seems uncertain whether they will survive the night …

Trial Trailer

The Sandman

The task with this was to create a 30 second long trailer; this would help us to focus on our editting skills, and focus on the ideas behind creating a trailer.
Here what becomes apparent is that we needed to work on our placement of the clips; as it seems to linnear, that it follows the storyline too closely, here we need to be able to change the layout of the clips to make it more interesting, and to not give away the storyline just in the trailer.
What I think is good about the trailer is that we used clips that would build up the tension at the end of the trailer, such as: the hallway elongating. After this you have a transition after he jumps into bed, which then the camera focus’ on the moon which morphs into the Sandman, which links to his appearance in the house. My favourite bit is shown after the title: the camera focus’ on the child’s bed as the door opens; we see the light from the hallway enter into the child’s bedroom and it creates a scenerio that leaves the audience wondering … what will happen to the child. With this it does not give way the end of the story; but leaves it on a cliffhanger, which this would make the audience wonder about, what will happen next …

The Editing in this section will be fast to indicate that the worker does not possess the normal amount of time to eat

·         Establishing shot of a business worker getting up (down stairs)

·         Medium shot of them opening the fridge and getting out a juice carton

·         Extreme close-up shot of them unwrapping a bar

·         Extreme close-up shot of them taking a bite out of the bar

Treatment for the Advert

A smartly dressed business person walks into the kitchen and pours out a drink of a non-branded carton of fruit juice out of the fridge, they also get a glass out of the cupboard with everything they do is fast as if they are in a rush, this includes the editing.

The person then put the glass on the side, and return the carton to the fridge before opening another cupboard and pulling out a box of “Get up and Go” cereal bars that they put down next to the glass on the counter.

They take a single bar out of the box both the music and the person slow down as they eat – they take slow bites of the bar. They throw the wrapper in the bin and drink their juice as everything speeds back up again and they are back to being in a rush.

They then grab their bag/briefcase/laptop bag and swiftly leave. The image blurs as the tagline – “A speedy solution to breakfast” appears on screen, possibly with a voiceover.

Brand Name and Slogan - Tv Advert

The brand name for our cereal bar is “Get up and Go” bars with our slogan is "A speedy solution to breakfast”. This product is aimed at teh office workers, who do not have any time to spair by wasting valuable time to sit down and eat a proper meal. This for them would be the perfect solution, and can also be eaten during a break as well.

Aside from our main target audience this bar could also be ideal for the working class, as these bars are not exclusively aimed for one part of the audience; these bars are availiable for anyone who does not have a lot of time on their hands such as working class or school children, as it would narrow the field too much for the retail, if they were only aimed at such a small audience.

Continuancy Film Tester

The Thief

This was an experiment that we were given by our teacher; that would try to make us use different camera angles as well as the continuancy of our clips. For me this is a bit static and does not have much variation of the clips, and tehre is nothing visually that helps to build tension, I think that it would have been better if there had been a clips (or two) were you saw the owner of the car relising that he/she was having their car nicked, and so had some quick scenes flashing between the faces of the different characters. This would have made it seem more real, and more interesting to watch.
