Ancillary task 2

Image:

With my final image for my Film poster; I have made it look as if it is a Daguerreotype image ( this means that it was printed onto a silver plate, and so therefore there was no negative image produced). This style for me was perfect; as it helped to link with the demon possession, due to the fact that demons like to leave (generally) no evidence behind, therefore they will not allow images to be taken of them (including negative images). Also the aged look of the image; helps to show that this is a recurring story (that’s it’s happened before) and creates a link with the past.
With this type of poster I decided that it would look better if the eyes of the character were scratched out (similar to ‘The Woman in Black’s poster); this made the poster seem more dramatic, and helps to show the genre of the film better. This then could be linked to the pentagram seen in the lower left hand corner; as this also gives an indication to what the film is based on, and what will happen to the characters.
With the concepts of the magazine; there is one thing that I have not done. I have not put the actor’s names on the poster; as generally they are not placed: this is sometimes not the case if you are using a famous character, but as ours are not famous (and are unknown) so they don’t have to be put on the cover.
In my final product I also decided to add in a web based media link: to my paper based media. This was done by adding in a QR-Code: this links the poster to a version of my trailer that’s on YouTube; this will then allow the audience, to scan the barcode in and remotely access it. This is a new concept that is slowly becoming more popular, and this could be a new way of advertising the film.
Over all I am very happy with the final image; I did find this task harder than the Magazine Cover, as here I relied on just one image. It was hard to find an old fashioned style that allowed the font to be in white, as with some it was hard to see. But I do really like the final effect as it looks clean and crisp; I like that it contrasts with the idea of having it in the old type style: compared to the new style of the Magazine Cover.

QR-Code - links to trailer on YouTube

To access the trailer through the poster is a new concept, which is slowly coming into fashion. The idea of this concept is that: you can scan the barcode with your smart phone; this then allows you to be directed to the webpage that’s imbedded into it.
In relation to the ancillary task: the film poster; this then allows a cross media link to be formed, and intern allows another media technology to be formed. The site used to create/ generate the code is http://www.quickmark.cn/En/qrcode-datamatrix-generator/?qrBookmark; this allowed me to be able to generate my own code, so that it would only link to my site ( and my clip). To enable this to work propally I had to paced in my code (after uploading the clip to YouTube): another link to the clip is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcbsvOGw8DQ&feature=youtu.be , as it was not easy to find (due to the fact it had no views).

My Billing Block

Infomation Needed:

·         Production company – HCS Horror INC
·         Actors- Hannah George, Charlotte Southam, Samantha Kent
·         Music composers – Hannah George
·         Casting by -  S.G&Co.
·         Costume designers – HCS Horror INC
·         Editor – Charlotte Southam
·         Director of Photography –  Hannah George
·         Props Co-ordinator- S.G&Co.
·         Written by – Charlotte Southam
·         Produced by – HCS Horror INC
·         Co-Directed by – Charlotte Southam & Hannah George

Presentation of Infomation:
With creating the billing block the difficultly was having to divide up the names of the jobs to the two main people that were involved in creating our film trailer. My college and I found this part hard; as we both had a hand in all the different steps, the only concrete work that we did solo was the acting, and myself creating the music. The costume we all created; the editing was mostly done by Charlotte, but I had a hand in editing as few areas: the first one was the transitions of the flash back (00.24-00.31 seconds), the second was the transition of the pentagram (00.41 - transition). Then I used some quick editing through the running scenes (00.42-00.45), (00.54-59), (1.01-1.05). We both had a hand in creating the story idea/ the plot line; I took all the photos at the film shoots ( but we both edited our own versions: to create the ancillary tasks), and we both filmed different parts and directed it together.
We then came up with the idea of creating two group names to cover some of the jobs: HCS Horror INC and S.G&Co. This helped to cover some of the jobs that involved both of us; but we could not use them too frequently as otherwise it would be too repetitive.
Then in deciding how to present the billing block: I typed all the information onto Macromedia Flash, but this programme kept trying to have all the text the same size. To get the different sizes I then typed it onto a Microsoft Word document: this allowed be to have the different font sizes, and then I was able to paste it onto the Flash document (the poster) and change the alignment of the text to the center.

Billing Block - Examples

What's Expected on a billing block:

·         Production company
·         Actors
·         Music composers
·         Casting director
·         Costume designers
·         Editor
·         Director of Photography
·         Written by
·         Produced by
·         Director by
Examples:

what seems to be recurring with the billing block:
What seems to be very recurring is the elongated text; that has a narrow base, this seems to almost be stereo typical of a billing block, and would seem to be something that I might include on my poster.

Bel Ami
The contrast in the two colours (the grey and the white) would allow the text to be visible; but due to the size of the text it is hard to read, because the font is also short (in height) it also limits the viability. With the text; you have it in two different sizes, this is to try to help the visibility, but it does not really help the text, as the colour of the grey seems to melt into the background.
J.Edgar
The colours used in the background are the black and the sandy colour; this contrasting with the white writing does not go very well against the sandy coloured, were as it is far more visible then the other colour. There are the different size of texts which help you focus on the people, not just their title (/role in creating the film).
Journey 2 - The Mysterious Island

Here the text is white with a dark background; this allows the text to be clearly read, even with the small text. What is different is that you have the image still visible even at this low shot; this adds some contrast. But because you still have the image visible; this does make it harder to find the right colour text, but as its dark it makes this easier to solve.
The Hunter Games

With the Hunters Games; the red writing is very striking against the black background, this automatically helps with the visibility of the writing. Even though the text is narrow; it is still easy to see (easier than some), the red then contrasts against the yellow writing, and this helps to draw your eye to this section of the poster.
Wrath of the Titans
With Wrath of the Titans you have the white writing against the black background; this makes it very clear and easy to read, and makes it very visible even though due to the small size.

Sizes of Different Posters

Sizes:

With the different sizes of the film posters; this helps in deciding what type of image that you best think will grab the audience’s attention, this is all dependant on were the poster is placed and what size it is.
For my poster it would have to be in a portrait orientation; it could with either (to UK standards) be:

This then helps with the planning of the poster; as you have to make sure that it’s not cramped, or that is not got enough information on it. From comparing the two; I have decided that the best size (for me) would be the 27 inches x 40 inches, as this is the most common one used and would fit the poster conventions better than the 20 inches x 20 inches.

My Ideas for my Film Poster

Example Film Posters

Poster Ideas

This is similar to the post on the Magazine ideas: this was my first step in trying to decide, what a basic poster would look like. This helped me in deciding some of the first poster ideas; and helped to eliminate some of the images that I took on site, and so helped in producing some of the combined images, or possible layouts that I then explored.

Saul Bass - Ideas For Poster Design

Ancillary task 1

With this poster I have made the character smaller so that you can see more of the title; if it was a more well-known magazine (like Empire) they can afford to have less of the title seen as they are a popular. As my magazine is only just starting out; it needs to have the title seen so that it would be easily recognisable, and people are more likely to buy it.

With the colours used on the poster; I tried to carry on the idea of the autumn setting: this includes the gold’s and the light greens. This then contrasts with the navy blue of the jumper; with using the red to highlight certain colours of the text (as well as the black), this helps to draw the eye to the different areas of the text.
With the text it sharp and got clean lines; this helps the text to be visible even with some of the smaller text. It also makes it legible at a distance; this would be beneficial for if this magazine were to be sold in a store, as it would help to make it seem more professional.

Creating my Magazine Front Cover

Magazine Barcodes

Barcode

To create the barcode for my film magazine front cover; I decided to create my own by using and internet resource, this for me was important as I did not want to copy a code off the internet as tehn it would have no relevance to my work, I wanted it to follow in the continuance so that it tied into my work. For this I searched on Google for a software package that did just that; it was here I found a good link that when copied would come up as a good quality image: http://www.quickmark.cn/En/qrcode-datamatrix-generator/?qrBookmark
I had wanted to put a date on the barcode; but sadly that was not possible, this was due to the length of the code, so that not all of the text would have been able to be seen, so I settled for ‘NO.1 F1lms Magazine $2.50’ I had wanted to have my magazine price in Sterling (£) but the site would ot allow this, and so I had to opt for the American Dollar.
Mobile Tag - For Smart Phone

I then had an idea; that could I use something that would use modern technology to the link this magazine with something on the internet, I decided that it was more pertinent for it to be linked to my blog ( as this contained more work, as well as all the clips). To gain access to this kind of software I went on the search engine Google: http://www.quickmark.cn/En/qrcode-datamatrix-generator/?qrBookmark

Then all I had to do was to give my QR-Code a name and to paste in the URL code, this then allowed me to have a unique code that linked in with my blog tying all of my work together.

Inspiration for the Magazine Film Cover

Title Idea for the Magazine Cover

In regarding the choices that I made in creating the magazine title; the one that stands out the most (in my opinion) is NO.1 F1lms; this is because it is not long: this means that the text can be bigger on the cover, it will also then help it to be more easily edited together ( as the gaps in the font makes it easier to place in the ‘NO.’), plus it was the idea that first came to mind, the others were just an experimentation to expand the idea.

Fonts to use in the Poster & Magazine Cover

Looking at the different fonts:

With looking at the different fonts: it’s hard to pick the right one as it has to be able to fit in with both the poster and the film magazine cover. As I wanted to be able to have the text in white; the text would then work with both the colourings, for this I have decided that the best text option for this would be ‘Complex_IV25’ as it seems to be slightly narrow, but still legible. I also like it as it looks like normal written script, which seems to help with the genre of the trailer, as its slightly more spooky.

 Title Font Ideas

Magazine Poster Ideas

Here I have three hand drawn ideas: for different layouts for my magazine front cover, these ideas are rough and may or may not be used in my final product. But this is to start the ball rolling, and to expand my ideas on how the information and the images should be placed, to obtain a good looking ancillary task.

Conventions of a Film Magazine Cover and Poster

Introduction to 2nd half of the Project - Magazine Front Covers & Film Posters

Now that the filming has been completed I have to create a film poster, and the front cover of a magazine that has been completely designed by myself and contains my own pictures (none taken from the internet).

This is one that I created at the beginning of the summer holidays; I used the idea of the general Teddy Bears picnic rhyme and tried to used the storyline to create a darker poster to illustrate that to this rhyme that there is a hidden meaning. To do this I illustrated it with a selection of my own photos, to create this image I used a total of 4 different images; then combined them on Macromedia Fireworks to achieve the different layers , and to erase certain parts, but to get the images darker and to change the contrast ( the light to dark ratio) I used Jasc Paint Shop Pro.

(This is a prototype that was created in July 2011; this was experimenting with the different software options that I could use in creating my film poster, and the software that I could use in creating my magazine front cover)
To improve the poster the title I would have made the image of the bear and the Title of the film a bit larger; but the title used might not be the one that we end up using for the final images, but the idea of the image being in the wood, will definatly be used in the final product.

Final Product - Film Trailer

For the trailer it seems like not a lot of work goes in to making one; I mean it’s only (on average) 2 minutes long. But actually it’s really hard to come up with innovative ideas; for the scenes that go into creating a diverse trailer. At the start most of our scenes were with the characters running; this proved that our trailer needed more varied scenes, as ours were far too repetitive, to counter act this: we had to expand on our story idea. With the changes to the plot (posted on ‘Changes to the Plot’) we added more context to our story, and consequently more varied scenes.

The only difficultly that we did have whilst filming (apart from an actor being sick half way through) was the continuance of the shots; this was due to the changing of the seasons, from the beginning of the filming: which was very green, to the end of our time filming: which was very red. But I think that through the editing process that this is not that noticeable, that the audience’s eye will be on more the action in the scene.

One thing that we cannot change is that the picture quality (due to the download format) is not beneficial to the quality of our filming; for this I do have a HD version: this will be seen when the trailer is shown to the prospective audience. But because the HD version was such a high quality it would not post on the ‘Blogger’ site. To get the trailer onto the blog; I had to use a lower quality version, but in retrospect the quality of the picture is not that bad, it just because I prefer the HD version, as it shows our trailer off in the best potential light.

Voice Overs

To add more interest to the film trailer; I decided that to make the trailer more effective by adding in a voiceover, as it would add some variety to the voices heard throughout the clips (instead of just my own). With the voiceovers I broke the general convention of film trailers; this is using a teenage girl’s voice instead of a deeper male voice that you tend to always hear. Why I broke this convention was to keep the continuance of the trailer, and it would be still in keeping with the storyline. As we have no male characters in our trailer; it would be out of context to have a male voice if you had not heard any male voices throughout the trailer, and it would not make any sense, and would confuse the audience.

The First 3 Clips:

The first three clips are very quiet; they were the first ones taken, and were done as an experiment to see what the voiceover would sound like at the different intervals. For me the idea of them is good. But they did cause some unrest between my college and myself, as we both wanted to do this different ways. The idea of the voice “They weren't expecting it all to change”, "it took a turn for the worst" and “History can repeat itself” gives a sinister tone; which helps to build up the suspence,  and give subital questions to the audience, such as: what will can, and reitterating the fact that this event has happened before, and will claim even more lives.
Clip no.1 - "They weren't expecting it all to change"

Clip no.2 - "It took a turn for the worst"

Clip no.3 - "History can repeat itself"

The Next 5 clips:

With the next 5 clips the main aspect of these were to get the voiceovers louder, so that they  could be heard, and were loud enough to go in with the music.
In regarding the 3 inisial quotes I decided that it would be better to shorten “they weren’t expecting it all to change” to “everything can change” as the original quote was far to long. Here the main aspect was not the variety of the qoutes; but it was the volume needed to be louder, this is why there are more clips. Because the previous 3 clips had been so quiet it made it hard to edit them to a louder scale ( to make the clips audiable) and to make them legiable. This is why  there are multiple copies so that the different patterning of the voice could be picked up, and gave more of a selection that I could use in the final product.

When should our film be released?

Question:

With what time that our trailer should be marketed at is a hard question to answer, when should it be released in to the cinema or the advertising start?

Answer:

For my trailer (and the film) the setting is in the autumn with it slightly going over into the winter; for me this is the time when it should be released into the cinema, this is help to integrate the audience into the story, as this is building a comparison to the setting of the film. As this film would be Low Budget it fits more into the Main Stream market; and so does not have to co-inside with the summer block busters or the Sundance Film Festival.

What festivals could it be showcased in (if any)?:

There could be the possibility that the film could be showcased in London at the ‘Zero Film Festival’; this festival is internally made up from self-financed films, and made up by independent film makers. Film Festivals such as the ‘Zero Film Festival’ could be a good place to show case this film; as it could be paid for by the directors (my work college and I) so would be eligible to be entered into such an event. This would also be a good place to start to get recognised for the work, and so would start to help build up a reputation in the film industry.

Significant or Notable Film Festivals

Planning Around a Film Festival
Planning around a film festival can be vital to the success of a film; as this is were you can get advertisement and that your film can get promoted, depending on your film and its style will ultimately decide what event you will attend, which will vary due to different film types, and the different audiences that will view your film.

Age Rating Slide

Our Age Rating Slide

This slide is going to be seen at the beginning of the trailer; as it indicates what age range this film will be aimed at: with our trailer being aimed at late teens and adults.
To create this slide the programme used was ‘Microsoft Word’; we then changed the layout of the page ( to landscape), we then changed the background so that it was green, then with the usage of a table ( and by merging parts of the columns together) it helped to create the final product (shown above).
The American version (seen bellow) was important inspiration, in the placement of objects for our version. The only difference being: that instead of having ‘By the Motion Picture Association of America’ we had “By the British Board of Film Classification’ as it was more relevant to our product. Also we imported the ’15’ age rating; and placed it in the space of the ‘R’ rating, this then made it the British equivalent. The final thing was to get the logo from the American version (situated on the second collumn on the far right) this then allowed it to be a similar copy (to that of the American version) but made it relevant to our project, and shows the development of an alternative resource.
Ours is based on -

Music for the film Trailer

Sheet Music

The highlighted areas ib teg sheet music indicate to the main part of the tune, that I used in creating the music trailer. The music had to be split up into three different sections, due to the fact that the Apple Mac would not allow such vast movement in changing of the musical keys. Therefore to get the full piece of music; I had to split it up in logical orders so that the pieces could then be edited together, and therefore form a continual piece of music
Beginning part of the Music for the Trailer

This part was played at the very beginning of the piece; we then had to try to place in into the trailer, it was then placed at the end as it seemed to ask a question, as well as echoing the tune played before. This seemed to give more character to the piece; as this alteration changed the tune to make it different, and that these few notes were played and octave higher, to that it would standout against the previous music.

Middle part of the Music for the Trailer

This is the general tune of The Teddy Bears Picnic; the reason to why there are spaces between the music is so that it was easier to edit down the music to fit the trailer, as otherwise would get clashes in the music from where it has been closely edited and does not fit in with the continuance with the ending product.
Faster part of the Music for the Trailer

This part was created to add and to build tension for the piece; all this is the tune but faster which helps to pick up the pace of the trailer. As the tempo of the music picks up it seems to create a stronger atmosphere for were the drama is taking place, it’s vital for the audience to hear the faster music here as without the sound the clips would be monotone and not of any significance.

Ending part of the Music for the Trailer

This part was created to almost give a question to the audience that has not been answered; due to the ending part of this clip goes higher, which is an echo to the clips previously played but does seems to question the idea of the basic storyline for the original context of the rhyme.
